What is fuel poverty?

A household is in fuel poverty if it spends more than 10% of its income just to keep their home warm enough.

Who does fuel poverty affect?

Fuel poverty impacts over 6 million households across the UK. It can affect some households more than others including low income families, older people, people with health conditions, single parent households – anyone living in homes that are cold, poorly insulated, or expensive to heat.

Why is this relevant?

Years of the energy crisis have left countless families struggling in cold, unsafe homes. Many households are being forced to choose between heating and other essentials which has serious effects on health and wellbeing. Debt to energy suppliers has now reached a record £4.43 billion, showing how many people can no longer afford basic energy needs.

In Wales alone around 340,000 households are estimated to be living in fuel poverty, that’s 25% of all households. This means thousands of people are at higher risk of illness, stress, damp and mould, and long-term financial hardship.

Are you or someone you know experiencing fuel poverty?

There is a wide range of support and advice available. Your energy supplier may be able to help you with payment plans or emergency credit. Suppliers also provide funding through the ECO4 grant scheme to improve home insulation which can make your home warmer and more energy efficient, Blue Turtle can help you access this funding.

Organisations such as the National Energy Action and Energy Saving Trust can offer free guidance and signpost you to additional support.

What is Fuel Poverty Awareness Day and how can you help?

On 26 November National Energy Action (NEA) lead a campaign to raise awareness of fuel poverty across the UK. The campaign aims to make sure the voices of households living in fuel poverty are heard by those who can make change happen. If you are able to donate to support NEA’s work, you can do so here  – Make a donation – National Energy Action (NEA)
