We know that applying for ECO4 can be confusing, but we’re here to tell you it’s not!
Here are some of the most commonly asked questions from you as the customer, with clear answers so you know exactly what to expect.
What is the ECO Scheme?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme is a government initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and addressing fuel poverty across the UK. Under the scheme, energy suppliers are required to support low-income, vulnerable, and fuel-poor households in making their homes warmer and more energy-efficient. The current phase runs until March 2026 and focuses on properties with the lowest EPC ratings, requiring upgrades of at least two EPC bands to achieve a minimum rating of ‘D’.
How do I apply for ECO4?
The application process is quick and straightforward, it takes just a couple of minutes!
Start by completing an application form or inquiring with a registered managing agent like Blue Turtle. From there, we’ll assess your application, recommend the most suitable measures, and outline your available options. We’ll also connect you with a trusted installer who will conduct an initial energy assessment of your property. After this first assessment, the installer will provide a personalised report detailing the estimated costs and benefits of the recommended improvements. If you’re happy to move forward, a surveyor will visit your property to complete a more detailed evaluation before the work begins.

How do I qualify?
If you or someone in your household receives any of the following benefits, you may be eligible for support:
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Pension Credit (Guarantee Credit)
- Pension Credit (Savings Credit)
- Working Tax Credits
- Child Tax Credits
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefits
There are also two other ways to qualify through ECO, either with a household income below £31,000 per year (before tax) or if someone in the home has an NHS-listed condition affected by heat or cold. If neither of these applies, your council tax band could still make you eligible under the GBIS scheme.
Will ECO4 cover all the costs of installation?
We’ll check your eligibility to see which energy efficiency upgrades you qualify for free. Sometimes, a contribution may be required from the installers, for example, if additional ventilation is needed. If that’s the case, they’ll outline everything clearly after your survey, so you’ll know exactly what’s involved before you decide to go ahead.
