What is External Wall Insulation (EWI)?

External Wall Insulation (EWI) involves fixing a layer of insulation material to the exterior wall, then covering it with a special type of render (plasterwork) or cladding.

The finish can be smooth, textured, painted, tiled, panelled, pebble-dashed, or finished with brick slips. This can add value to your property and is very decorative.

EWI is very similar to IWI in that it is primarily used to treat solid wall properties that suffer from excessive heat-loss through the walls.

What are the benefits of External Wall Insulation?

One of the benefits of External Wall Insulation over Internal Wall Insulation is that it doesn’t impact the floor area of the property because the extra insulation is attached to the exterior wall. It can also improve the appearance of the property exterior. Not only that, fitting EWI to your property is less intrusive for the occupant as the installers are working on the outside of the property.

How can I get External Wall Insulation for free?

If your home has uninsulated solid walls and an Energy Performance Rating of D or below you could qualify for a free External Wall Insulation grant through ECO4 or GBIS, the two UK government-backed grant schemes.
