Solar PV Panels
How do Solar Panels work?
Solar PV Panels use the sun’s energy to excite the electrons in the photovoltaic material, generating an electrical current. The PV panels collect this energy and turn it into DC power. This electricity is then sent through an inverter where it is converted from DC power to AC power, which can be used in the property.
The generated electricity passes through a meter where total generation data is collected. Once the power reaches your fuse board it will be distributed to items or appliances that are currently running. Any surplus power which is not being used will now be exported to the national grid to be used elsewhere. Unless you have battery storage meaning you can store the electricity generated for later use.
During daylight hours, whilst the solar is generating, you will have the ability to use appliances for FREE from the solar PV, which can significantly reduce the energy bills for domestic and commercial properties.
The overall amount of energy you generate will all depend upon the size of the system you install. This can be determined by the roof / ground space available and the capacity of the local grid.
To enhance your energy savings we would also suggest installing a battery storage solution to minimise any export which would increase your savings further.
How much do Solar Panels cost?
The average solar PV panel array can cost anywhere between £5,000 and £10,000 depending on the number of panels you are fitting. The average 250W panel costs around £500.
Do Solar Panels require direct sunlight?
No, solar panels can generate electricity even without direct sunlight. Even in the winter, solar panels have been able to generate a significant portion of the nations’ electricity. Though they are more effective under direct sunlight, and benefit from being orientated in the direction which gives the greatest coverage of daylight.
How do I get free Solar Panels?
Free solar panels could be available if you’re eligible for a grant through the UK government-backed ECO4 scheme.
