Underfloor Insulation
How does Underfloor Insulation (UFI) Work?
Underfloor insulation works by placing insulating materials between the floor joists or directly underneath the floor surface. This barrier helps to prevent heat from escaping through the floor and stops cold air from entering from below.
Various materials can be used for underfloor insulation, including:
-
- Fiberglass Batts: These are pre-cut sections of fiberglass that fit between the floor joists.
- Foam Boards: Rigid panels made from polystyrene or polyisocyanurate that can be cut to size and placed under the floor.
- Spray Foam: Expanding foam that can be sprayed into gaps and around joists to provide a tight seal.
- Reflective Foil: Often used in conjunction with other insulation types to reflect heat back into the room.
The insulation is typically installed by lifting up the floorboards or accessing the space through vents or crawl spaces. In some cases, it might be installed from below if the building has a basement or crawl space. The insulation material is placed between or under the floor joists, ensuring there are no gaps where heat can escape.
What are the benefits of Underfloor Insulation (UFI) ?
-
Energy Efficiency: By reducing heat loss through the floor, underfloor insulation helps to keep indoor temperatures more stable, which can lead to lower heating and cooling costs.
-
Comfort: Insulating under the floor helps to eliminate cold spots and drafts, making the floor surface warmer and more comfortable to walk on.
-
Moisture Control: Some insulation materials also help to control moisture levels by preventing condensation, which can reduce the risk of mould and mildew growth.
-
Soundproofing: Insulation can also help to reduce noise transmission between floors, providing a quieter living environment.
-
Environmental Impact: Improved energy efficiency reduces the demand for heating and cooling, which can lower your carbon footprint and contribute to overall environmental conservation.
